The pinion cutting machine (1) has a foot plate (3), a carrier support (4) extending upwards from it and carrying a drive transmission (5) on its upper end, an approximately vertical blade (7) which moves reciprocally and defines a cutting plane, a guide handle (12), a switch-controlled blade drive motor and a blade cover (9). The blade cover can be displaced from a position at least partly beneath the drive housing (5) transversely w.r.t. the blade and returned so that it moves past the drive housing. In its lowest position the cover extends upwards until shortly before the drive housing. ADVANTAGE - Ensures safe cover for blade, and enables it to be observed better.
