Thiol-substd. carboxyl acids of formula (I), or a salt of (I), are used in the prepn. of a medicament for combating pathophysiological-related excitation/agitation disorders (and disorders caused by these) and allergic disorders. X = H, or X+X = a bond; n = 1-10. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are reactive at NMDA receptors and are useful in treatment of withdrawal symptoms after alcohol abuse, tranquiliser abuse or narcotic abuse or 'panic disorder'. They have an antidegenerative, anti-atrophication, and stimulating effect on the central nervous system and heart, and an antiarrhythmic, metabolism-regulating, memory-stimulating general geriatric and antiallergic effect, and can this be used in treatment of damage to brain and heart, as found in Alzheimer's disease or Karsakov syndrome. Admin. is oral, topical, nasal, transdermal, rectal, subcutaneous, intravenous, intramuscular or by inhalation, in doses of 0.1-800 (esp. 50-300)mg/day.
