Body armour for a torso, leg or hand protector comprises a number of small plates 6, 7, 14, 15 of armour arranged in rows. Each plate in a row is connected to the next plate in that row by overlapping the side regions of the plates and passing a connector 4 through holes 10 in the corners of the plates. Adjacent rows of plates are joined together by securing them to backing plates (14 and 15) which lie behind the junction between two rows. The rows are secured together using the same connectors 4 which join adjacent plates within a row. The connectors 4 are flexible extensible snap acting plastics rivets, which gives the body armour great flexibility. The snap fastenings comprise a head 17 which can pass through the holes in the platen, and a larger head 13, backed by a washer 12, which cannot. A retainer 18 snap fastens over the head 17 to complete the assembly. In a preferred embodiment, Fig. 15, head 17 has a tail 101 to facilitate ease of location of retainer 18. Once assembled, the tail is broken off via line of weakness 101A. <IMAGE>
