The method is for decreasing the font memory of the laser beam printer by storing the compression code after separating the font data to four kinds of all white, all black, irregular bit patterns and a pattern for shifting the all black bit pattern. The compression codes, shift information bit and irregular bit pattern are stored in the font memory. In case of reading the font data, all white or all black or irregular bit pattern is written to the raster memory and the raster address is increased as much as 1. In case of reading the shift information, the all black bit is shifted and recorded to the raster memory, then the raster address is increased as much as 1.
