The opening times of the intake valves are advanced when the engine is operating below a predetermined temperature so as to prolong the period during which the intake valves are open at the end of the engine exhaust strokes. This causes exhaust gases to be forced into the intake ports for the purpose of improving charge preparation during cold starts and cold running.
