Sulfonyl compounds of the formula <IMAGE> (I) where Ar is the radical of a benzene or naphthalene ring, R1 and R2 are each hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted C1-C4 -alkyl, substituted or unsubstituted phenyl, C1-C4-alkoxy, carboxyl, C1-C4-alkoxycarbonyl, cyano, halogen or hydroxysulfonyl, R3 is nitro, amino, C1-C4-alkanoylamino or benzoylamino, and R4 is a radical of the formula <IMAGE> <IMAGE> where X1, X2 and X3 are each hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted C1-C4-alkyl or substituted or unsubstituted phenyl, and X4 is a group which is detachable under alkaline conditions, either in the free form or in the form of their salts, are useful for synthesizing reactive dyes.
