A solid cylindrical slider (31) in the housing (10) of the flow control valve (8) limits the passage between the pump connection port (15) and the master cylinder port (11) so that outlet pressure from the pump (25) does not act directly on the master cylinder (1). The pump is by-passed (45) with a relief valve (46) which depressurises the pump inlet when pressure on the main valve (8) exceeds a limit.
