The braking system includes a pump (25) and control valves (11, 22) which are controlled by a regulating unit. A valve unit is connected in the brake line between the main braking cylinder (1) and the braking pressure control circuit. In a first operating mode, in which the main braking cylinder is operated, the brake line communicates with the main braking cylinder. In a second operating mode, in which the main cylinder is not operated, the communication is interrupted, and the pump inlet communicates with the main braking cylinder or a container. A separation valve (24) is arranged in the return line (23). The valve is controlled depending on the charge condition of the low pressure storage (28). With an empty low pressure storage, the return line (23) is blocked downstream of the low pressure storage (28). ADVANTAGE - Improved regulating system so that in operation at wheel brake cylinder undershooting of atmospheric pressure cannot occur.
