The method involves detecting operating parameters and feeding them to an electronic control unit (1) which controls the operation of the engine or other device. The parameters are stored in a control unit memory (4.1). At least one parameter's storage is dependent on a predefined operating parameter of the engine. Parameter storage begins when one of the parameters has a defined value representing an operating state and ends with a predefined value of another parameter. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. for use with internal combustion engines and exhaust cleaning arrangement. More than one parameter can be stored in each memory location.
