Dinitropolyalkylbenzenes can be prepared by nitration of polyalkylbenzenes using HNO3 in the presence of H2SO4 by initially introducing at least 50% of the H2SO4 as the reaction medium and simultaneously metering in HNO3 and polyalkylbenzene and any remaining H2SO4 in such a way that the metered-in substances polyalkylbenzene and HNO3 are in a molar ratio of 1:2-10. H2SO4 is employed in a concentration of from 81 to 96% by weight and HNO3 in a concentration of from 95 to 100 DEG C by weight. For work-up, the dinitropolyalkylbenzenes are first freed from a majority of the acids and then treated with a very dilute aqueous solution of a dispersant in order to remove residual acid.
