<p>Apparatus for pyrolyzing organic waste matter has a reaction furnace (2) whose upper portion is connected to a raw material supply casing (15) and a gas discharge pipe (6), whose lower end is provided with a residue discharge port (3), and in which a vent pipe (19) for supplying air is disposed In the apparatus, a temperature sensor (11) is disposed in an upper space of the reaction furnace (2) or in the gas discharge pipe (6) in the vicinity of the reaction furnace (2), thereby to control the amount of a raw material to be supplied into the reaction furnace (2) such that the temperature of gas flowing in the gas discharge pipe (6), is maintained at the water boiling point or a temperature in the vicinity thereof. The gas discharge pipe (6) is connected, at the other end thereof, to an internal-combustion engine (9) through a gas cooling device (7).
