The monitoring equipment (4) comprises a long tube (5) which extends from the boiler surface (1) into the water (A) where an orifice (10) allows water entry. The tube (5) completely encloses the detector (6) except for its connection terminals. The top of the tube (5) which is outside the boiler has a lid (7) with an outlet pipe (8) controlled by a valve (9). Brief operation of the outlet valve (9) causes steam pressure to raise the local water level within the tube (5) thus testing the detector (6). a relief orifice (11) returns the water level to normal. ADVANTAGE - Upper water level detectors in boilers may be tested without raising general water level.
