The circuit breaker (1) described has a connection terminal (8, 16) at the upper and lower ends of each switching tube (4). At least the upper terminal (16) has a metal element (17) which is dimensioned substantially as a function of the current to be carried. The metal element (17) is fixed to parts (12) of the wall of an insulating holder (6) for the switching tubes (4) by means of a separate bracket (21) made of insulating material. The distance between the live parts of the circuit breaker (1) and the parts which are earthed is thus increased, and safety with respect to partial discharges and breakdown is improved.
