The automatic transmission comprises a torque converter (10) and a planetary gear train (12). The gear train (12) includes a first sun gear (26) which is keyed to the output shaft (22) of the torque converter (10). A first planetary gear (28) meshes with the sun gear (26) and that gear (28) is keyed to an axle (30). The axle (30) is mounted for rotation to a carrier (32) and the carrier (32) is rotated by the input shaft (20) of the torque converter (10) so that as the carrier (32) rotates so too does the axle (30). A second planetary gear (34) is also keyed to the axle (30) and that gear (34) meshes with a second sun gear (36). The latter sun gear (36) rotates a drive shaft (38). |
