<p>Hydrocarbons of higher molecular weight than benzine, such as paraffin waxes and lubricating oils, are obtained by the catalytic reaction of carbon monoxide with hydrogen at below 375 DEG C. and above 20 atm. pressure in a hydrocarbon medium which remains liquid under the reaction conditions. The catalyst may be dispersed in the hydrocarbon medium or may be rigidly mounted, e.g. in tubes or in gauze pockets on a stirring device. Preferably, the hydrocarbon medium is continuously removed from the reaction vessel and returned thereto, if desired with intermediate filtration or other purification and if desired with intermediate regeneration of the filtered catalyst, e.g. by grinding. The reaction products may be separated from the hydrocarbon medium by distillation or by extraction with sulphur dioxide or other solvent. Specified catalysts are the metals of the sixth periodic group and of the iron group, and titanium, zinc, copper, vanadium, aluminium and manganese; oxides or other compounds of these metals, including the sulphides of the heavy metals, may also be used, as well as mixtures of the metals or their compounds, e.g. mixtures comprising (a) iron, copper and manganese, or (b) chromium, zinc and manganese, or (c) iron, copper and zinc. The catalysts may be activated by treatment with an alkali, a halogen or a halogen hydride, or by addition of a rare earth or silver or a compound thereof. In an example, a mixture of carbon monoxide with a large excess of hydrogen is heated to 250 DEG C. under 50 atm. pressure with anthracene oil in which a catalyst comprising zinc oxide, magnesia and iron is suspended; a mixture of hydrocarbons, mainly paraffin wax and lubricating oil, is recovered from the product by distilling off the anthracene oil or by extraction with liquid sulphur dioxide.
