The water filter assembly essentially comprises a screen drum with a screen filter member whereby the screen drum is rotatably and axially movably disposed in a screen drum housing provided with brushes for cleaning the exterior of the screen filter member. The screen filter member is subjected to a water flow from its outside to its interior. At the lower end of the screen drum, a threaded spindle is provided by means of which the screen drum is rotatable and axially displaceable. The thresded spindle is coupled to an electric motor which is under the influence of an electric control unit. The electric motor is sequentially operated by the control unit after certain time intervals to periodically clean the screen filter member.
