The invention is a method for the use of a microorganism preparation, preferably a yeast cell preparation, in an assay for the quantitative measurement of the biochemical function of animal cells assayed in an in vitro assay, for the quality control of a reagent or reagent kit used in the assay, wherein the yeast cell preparation shows a predetermined level of the biochemical function to be measured quantitatively, said level - in case of the appropriate/perfect quality of the reagent or reagent kit - giving the quality control target value, and the yeast cells are auxotrophic for at least one biochemical substance vital for the yeast cells. The invention also relates to the use of the preparation as a quality control and to reagent kits containing the preparations.
