Process for making fibre chips by means of multiple longer blades 4, 14, provided with saw teeth and located side by side. With the sawing movement fibre chips are detached from the wood, the sawing movement occurring in the direction of the wood fibres. The shape of the fibre chips formed can be influenced by changing the direction of the blade performing the sawing movement in respect of the direction of the shaft 7 that lies in the longitudinal direction of the blade unit. The device for performing the process comprises a plurality of elongated blades 4, 14, provided with saw teeth and located side by side, and at least two support plates 6, 12 in which the two ends of the blades have been fixed.
