The device includes a die (1) with a chamber (2) which holds the coating material (3). A passage (5) connects the chamber to a delivery slot facing the moving tape (8). The opening has a lip which lifts the moving tape clear of the surface (11) of the die. The opening aligns with line the delivery passage on the side where the tape arrives. On the side where the tape leaves, the edge of the opening is cut away (12a) to allow the coating material to form a thicker layer in the direction of travel of the tape. The surface of the die then curves away from the tape, allowing a thicker layer of coating to form as the tape passes.
