Stacked boxes (8a-8d) are placed onto a conveyor (1) by a gripping system (3a,3b) which can either grasp the boxes or be disengaged from them. Each part of the gripping system comprises a horizontal palette (4a,4b) activated by a double acting actuator (5a,5b). Each part of the gripping system can be raised or lowered by cross members (6) which slide in vertical uprights (7). The gripping parts fit in horizontal slots (9a-9d) in the walls of the boxes. The stack of boxes is held above the conveyor by the gripping palettes holding the lowest box (8a) and lowered onto the conveyor. The palettes are then disengaged from this lowest box and raised to grip another box (8b) and then raise the stack. The box left on the conveyor is then conveyed away and the procedure repeated.
