Use of an alpha -tocopheryl phosphate, in particular in the dl or d form thereof, or one of the esters thereof, of general formula: in which: - R1 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl radical having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, in particular such as the methyl or ethyl radical, or an alpha -tocopheryl radical; - R2 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl radical having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, in particular such as a methyl or ethyl radical, or alternatively R2O represents an oxyethylenated chain, of formula in which R3 and R4 independently represent a hydrogen atom or a methyl radical, and n represents an integer greater than or equal to 1; or one of the salts thereof, for the preparation of a pharmaceutical, dermatological or cosmetic composition intended for the prevention or treatment of the harmful effects of free radicals, or as a cosmetic agent for combating free radicals.
