The steering column fixing structure (2) has webs (8,9) between which the column assembly (3) extends. A tie rod (10) extending between the webs has at one end a stop (13) which engages one of the webs (9), and at the other end a fastener (14) for locking the column assembly between the webs. The fastener is displaceable between locked and unlocked positions allowing displacement and adjustment of the column assembly relative to the webs. A flexible washer (13a) holds the tie rod under residual constraint when the fastener, in the unlocked position, is interposed between the stop and the corresponding web. The flexible washer internal peripheral edge is engaged on the stop and its external peripheral edge is associated with a support washer sliding on the web.
