A sterilizing agent, a gas, or a similar substance used for the same purpose is added to spring or tap water (i.e., is added to potable water) in a concentration high enough to prevent microorganisms from surviving or proliferating. The potable water with the agent or gas added thereto is stored in a hermetically sealed state. In use of the water, the previously added sterilizing agent or gas is neutralized or removed by adsorption (i.e., is removed from the stored water to bring the water to the original state), and the treated water is drunk, while the used adsorbent is neutralized or discarded after neutralization or treatment for rendering it harmless, or activated for reuse.
