Disclosed are herbicidal tetrazolinone derivatives, selective in paddy fields of the formula <IMAGE> (I) wherein X represents C1-4 alkyl, n represents 1, 2, 3 or 4, R1 and R2 each independently represents C1-6 alkyl, C2-4 alkenyl, C2-6 alkynyl, C3-8 cycloalkyl, aryl which may optionally be substituted (wherein the substituent is at least one radical selected from the group consisting of halogen, C1-4 alkyl, C1-2 haloalkyl, C1-2 haloalkoxy, C1-2 haloalkylthio, acyl, nitro and cyano) or aralkyl optionally substituted by halogen or R1 and R2 form, together with the N-atom to which they are bonded, a cyclic ring which may be substituted. Also, disclosed are novel intermediates useful in the preparation of the compounds of formula (I).
