A gas generator for air bags having a housing (2); an ignition means holding chamber (3); a combustion chamber (4) and a coolant filter chamber (5) which are provided in the housing; ignition means (6, 7) provided in the ignition means holding chamber (3); a canister (9) in the combustion chamber (4); and a coolant (10) and a filter (11) in the coolant filter chamber (5), characterized in that the canister (9) is provided therein with the coolant (10) adapted to cool a combustion gas and collect combustion residue.
