The device has connection elements (4, 5) staying in electrically conductive contact with a pole of a varistor (3) in a normal condition of an overvoltage protection element (1). A thermal expandable material (6) is arranged within a housing (2) such that position of the varistor is changed based on extension of the expandable material relative to position of the connection elements during thermal overvoltage of the varistor. The pole of the varistor does not stay in electrically conductive contact with the connection elements.
