A marking instrument has a reservoir (7) for marking fluid partially delimited by diaphragm (10) having its outer edge sealed to a body (12) of the marking instrument, and a hole at its centre through which extends a feed device (3) connected to the marking tip, an inlet port (11) of a feed channel (6) extending along the feed device being arranged to be opened and closed by the diaphragm which acts as a valve. The diaphragm (10) has a conical form to reduce the axial displacement of the feed device (3) needed to open the valve.
