A color coded system for encoding information on products and other substrates. The color code is printed by a color printer (FIG.2, item 40) using single intensity colors in specific shapes (FIG. 1, items 12-27) aligned side by side successively. The code is predetermined. The code can be read by a video device (FIG. 2, item 41) and decoded by a computer (FIG. 2, item 42). The present invention allows for densely packed encoded information in a small space that can be cheaply and easily read and decoded.
