A crystal oscillator (1) equipped with a crystal oscillator element (100) that includes an AT-cut crystal substrate (10) and first and second excitation electrodes (20, 30), and further equipped with a base member (300) and a lid member (200), wherein: the crystal substrate (10) includes an oscillating section (40) and a peripheral section (50) that is thinner than the oscillating section 40; the oscillating section (40) has a tapered lateral surface (46) provided on a first side in a first direction; the tapered lateral surface (46) is formed at an angle so as to contact the peripheral section (50) at an acute angle; the crystal oscillator element (100) is mounted onto the base member (300) with a first conductive holding member (340) electrically connected to the first excitation electrode (20) and a second conductive holding member (342) electrically connected to the second excitation electrode (30) interposed therebetween; and the first and second conductive holding members (340, 342) hold a region of the peripheral section (50) adjacent to the tapered lateral surface (46) on the first side of the crystal substrate (10).
