The present invention provides isolated polypeptides (SEQ ID NOs. 2 and 4) and variants and fragments thereof which are retroviral susceptibility gene products, the sequences SEQ ID NOs. 2 and 4 being Fv1 proteins of mice. The invention provides nucleic acids encoding said polypeptides and the use of the polypeptides and nucleic acids including their use in assays for inhibitors of retroviruses.
