A method of purifying glyoxylic esters which comprises the step of continuous crude distillation of crude glyoxylic esters in a filmy state in the presence of water and the step of azeotropic dehydration of the crude glyoxylic esters thus purified in the presence of an azeotropic agent such as propyl acetate, thus permitting high-purity glyoxylic esters to be prepared efficiently, readily and at a low cost.
