A plastic-clad optical fiber comprising a core made of quartz and a cladding made of a polymer which is provided around the periphery of the core with no gap. The cladding has a two-layer structure made of different polymers, and the refractive index (nCO) of the core, the refractive index (nCL1) of a first cladding provided around the periphery of the core, and the refractive index (nCL2) of a second cladding provided around the periphery of the first cladding satisfy 0.21≤∑(nCO2-nCL12)≤0.35 and n¿CL2? < nCL1. In consequence, a wide band optical fiber can be achieved, and it is possible to suppress the demerits due to such an increase in bandwidth (for example, a loss due to connection using connectors of press-fitting type, a bending loss, and the deterioration of light transmission loss in temperature variation). Accordingly, the present glass fiber can be suitably used as an optical signal transmission material with which to construct an ATM-LAN, a high-speed Ethernet or the like.
|
