A process is described to prepare propene and 1-butene making react 2-pentene with ethene in the present of a metathesis catalyst comprising at least a transition metal compound of the VIb, VIIb or VIII group of the Element Periodical Table of the elements and also a process to prepare propene a) to make react 1-butene and 2-butane to provide propene and 2-pentene in the presence of a metathesis catalyst comprising at least a transition metal compound of the VIb, VIIb or VIII group of the Element Periodical Table, b) to subsequently separate the propene and the formed 2-pentene, c) to subsequently make react the 2-pentene with ethene to provide propene and 1-butene in the presence of a metathesis catalyst comprising at least a metal transition compound of the Vib, VIIb or VIII group of the Element Periodical Table, d) to subsequently separate the propene and the formed 1-butene, e) to subsequently make return the formed 1-butene formed to step a).
