The engine has two cylinder cavities with pistons running the same way but with opposite working stroke sequences. These cavities are connected in the BDC zone by a transfer channel, which is only open when both pistons are at BDC. When the channel opens, high-pressure exhaust gas flows from one cylinder to the other one, which has just completed its induction stroke. The transferred exhaust gas can create an excess pressure charge, an expulsion charge or a levelling charge in laminar form, depending on the valve angle and the transfer flow channel cross section.
