The overcoat emulsion for protecting a carbon spot or other image transfer medium against smudging is made from a polyethylene wax emulsion. In addition, a stilt such as wheat starch may be added to the emulsion to improve the pressure absorbing qualities of the overcoat. In addition, a surfactant may be added to the emulsion to improve the wettability characteristics of the emulsion when being applied to a substrate such as a paper ply of a mailer.
