A hydraulic tensioner for tensioning a threaded connector has a substantially tubular (1) having an axis, one axial end to abut against an object, and another opposite axial end, a substantially tubular engaging element (2) arranged radially inside the housing (1) so as to form a space therebetween and provided with engaging means (11) for engaging a threaded connector, a plurality of pistons (4, 5, 6; 5', 6'; 5", 6"; 26, 27, 28) arranged in the space and spaced axially from one another so as to form a plurality of chambers in the space, and passages (8, 9, 10) for supplying a working liquid into the chambers whereby when the housing abuts against the object in one axial direction, the engaging element (2) is displaced axially in an opposite direction.
