Groundwater is pumped (4) from a borehole (1) through a heat exchanger (23) serving a production process. Heated water passes through an air cooler (21). If reduced to groundwater temperature it can be returned to the heat exchanger (23) inlet. Above that temperature, it is pumped to the first reservoir (2), or warm water buffer, set at a depth 20-120m below ground level. When the air temperature is below that of the warm water buffer, water is pumped (5) through a second air cooler (22) into a cold buffer (3). A single air cooler could serve both functions.
