A method of driving a CD-ROM drive is provided which includes the steps of setting an initial driving speed of a disk to a predetermined Nx speed, and measuring a length of time t required for generating a correction error signal (CES) of a digital signal processor (DSP) while playing the disk at the predetermined Nx speed. If it is determined that the measured CES generation time t is smaller than a first reference time t1, then the disk is played at Nx speed. If it is determined that the CES generation time t is equal to or greater than the first reference time t1, and smaller than a second reference time t2, the disk is played at (N-2)xspeed. If it is determined that the CES generation time t is equal to or greater than an (n-1)th reference time tn-1 and smaller than an nth reference time tn after the algorithm is sequentially repeated for all reference times between t1 and tn, the disk is played at 2x speed. If the CES generation time t is equal to or greater than the nth reference time tn, the playing of the disk is stopped.
