<p>An apparatus and a method are disclosed for measuring physical characteristics, such as temperature, of a molten bath (48). The apparatus includes a first refractory (64) that is transparent to light emitted from the molten bath. A second refractory (90) that is transparent to light is formed of a composition that is different than the first refractory. The second refractory extends from one end of the first refractory (64) and is axially aligned with the first refractory (64). The apparatus further includes a lens means (70) for receiving light transmitted from the molten bath (48) through the first refractory and the second refractory and the lens means (70) is axially aligned with the second refractory (90). The apparatus also includes a light spectrum analysis means (80) for analyzing the spectrum of the emitted light and for measuring a physical characteristic of the molten bath, such as temperature with an optical pyrometer.</p> |
