The device includes a number of display elements, each with an LCD (1) having a liquid crystal plate (2) and two polarisers (3,4) mounted on its large surfaces. The LCD is mounted in a transparent support (5) and illuminated from behind by a lamp (6). Additional light sources (8) are provided in the support, each source corresponding to an opening (10) in the first polariser (3). Light stopping sleeves are provided for each additional light source.
