The composite check valve comprises a first valve having a flap with obverse first and second sides which is deformable between an open position for providing fluid communication between the inlet port and the outlet port. The first side of the flap is displaced from the seat in the open position, and a closed position for preventing such communication, and is against the seat and blocks flow through the aperture in the closed position. An electromagnetic solenoid has a portion located in the flow passage, and has electrical winding defining a central magnetic flux axis and a number of magnetic segments. The magnetic segments include an armature and a pole piece adjacent the armature. The armature is physically translatable within a portion of the solenoid electrical winding along the flux axis relative to the pole piece. A translatable closure element is attached to and moveable with the armature. The closure element is positioned between the flap of the first valve and the outlet port, translation of the closure element being independent of the deformability of the flap of the first valve. The closure element is selectively engageable with the flap of the first valve for maintaining the flap in the closed position and preventing the deformation of the flap. Energisation of the electrical winding is effective to cause translation of the armature and the closure element.
