Oil intake pipe (6) for an internal combustion engine opens into one chamber (2) of an oil sump divided into two chambers (2,3). An intermediate chamber (4) is located between the two chambers, into which an oil return pipe (5) opens and from which openings (9,10,11) are provided for entry to and exit from the two main chambers. A valve (7) in the intermediate chamber has a shut-off device (8) which closes off one of the two chambers from the oil suction pipe. When open, oil can move between the chambers. A short circuit opening (23) is provided in the intermediate chamber, above the shut-off device, through which a connection is made to the oil chamber containing the suction pipe.
