Compounds of formula I,R-S-CH2CH(OH)CH2-S-R4(I),where R is tert-alkyl of 4 to 20 carbon atoms and 4 is benzothiazolyl, -(CH2)m-S-CH2CH(OH)CH2-S-(C1-C16alkyl), m is 0, or -(CH2)s-R7 where s is 1 to 4 and R7 is benzothiazolyl are effective additives for lubricants, hydraulic fluids or other lubricant systems. Some novel compounds of formula I are claimed.
