PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a relay device and its control method that notify an opposite communication network of the occurrence of failure even if the failure occurs in a network connected with the relay device and normal communication is obstructed.SOLUTION: A relay device (10) lying between communication networks (20a-20d) is provided with: a monitoring unit (40) for detecting failure in a communication network; a learning unit (70) for detecting a communication protocol in the communication network from a reception signal received from another communication network; and a pseudo failure generation unit (46) for generating a pseudo failure state corresponding to the detected communication protocol on the basis of a detection result at the monitoring unit and a detection result at the learning unit.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 9
