<p> 1. A process for producing a dialkanolamine of formula (II): <CHEM> wherein R<1>, R<2>, R<3>, R<4>, R<5>, R<6>, R<7> and R<8> each independently represent a hydrogen atom, a methyl group or an ethyl group; which process comprises reacting an alkylene oxide of formula (I): <CHEM> wherein R<1>, R<2>, R<3> and R<4> each independently represent a hydrogen atom, a methyl group or an ethyl group, with ammonia in the liquid phase, in the presence of a catalyst and is carried out under conditions such that: (i) the rate constant alpha of the reaction between ammonia and the alkylene oxide is at least 0.10, when the rate constant between an monoalkanolamine intermediate and said alkylene oxide is 1; and (ii) the rate constant beta of the reaction between said dialkanolamine and said alkylene oxide is not more than 0.7, when the rate constant between said monoalkanolamine and said alkylene oxide is 1. n</p> |
