The conveyor is operated by a controller which automatically changes mode according to the detected document length with respect to the length of the read area. The arrangement has a separator-conveyor part (14,15) that separates sheets from a stack (12) and feeds single sheets to a reading or scanning point. A printer part (24), located after the reading point, prints characters on a document carried away from the reading point. A setting part sets the readout region of the document delivered to the reading point. A selection part selects a first mode in which the print position is set on the readout region or a second mode in which the print position is set on a predefined document position at a distance from the read edge, whereby the document is used as a standard or reference document. A detection device detects the length of the document to be separated and a controller automatically switches between modes depending on the detected document length. Independent claims are also included for an image recorder and a method of automatically conveying documents.
