The piston ring is formed from at least one stack (1) of sheet layers (2), with gaps (3) between at least some of the sheet layers in the unloaded state, which close up when the ring is under load. The piston has at least one such ring fitted to it, with axial play on the piston shaft. The stack of layers may be formed from a band wound in a spiral.
