A membrane pump, especially a membrane metering pump has a monitoring device to monitor the intactness of the membrane. The membrane is a sandwich membrane consisting of several layers. Between the layers (13-18) of the sandwich membrane is embedded at least one layer made out of electrically conducting material covering the membrane surface at least partly. The layer(s) and a counter-pole is/are connected to an electrical monitoring apparatus (19) in conducting fashion which detects a change of an electrical parameter between the poles occurring with an incipient break of the membrane and displays the same. The counter-pole is the fluid to be pumped. The change of the ohmic resistance with an incipient membrane break is established by the monitoring apparatus and signaled.
