PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound useful as an intermediate for producing an antiviral agent. SOLUTION: A compound of formula I [X1 is H, a halogen, a 1-10C alkoxy or the like; X2-X4 are each H or a halogen; R1 is H, amino or the like; R2 and R3 are each H, a (substituted) 1-7C alkyl or the like], for example, 2- amino-6-chloro-9-[2,2-dichloro-3,3-bis(hydroxymethyl)cyclopropyl]purine. The compound of formula I is obtained by dissolving or suspending a dicarboxylic acid compound of formula II [R6 and R7 are each a (substituted) 1-7C alkyl] in a solvent and subsequently reacting the dissolved or suspended compound of formula II with a metal halide preferably at 0-50 deg.C for 0.5-5 hr. The amount of the used metal halide is controlled so that the amount of the contained hydride ions is preferably 6-20 moles per mole of the compound of formula II. The amount of the used solvent is preferably controlled so that the amount of the compound of formula II is 1-50 pts.wt. per 100 pts.wt. of the solvent.
