PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a used and taken up intermediate medium from being abused even when it flows out to the outside by overwriting and transferring a preliminarily stored invalid display pattern to a regular intermediate transfer image remaining on the intermediate medium in the middle of a transfer due to an interruption of the transfer because of some trouble. SOLUTION: When a transfer operation is interrupted because of some trouble and a countermeasure process for eliminating the obstacle is carried out, a CPU stores in a nonvolatile memory that the abnormality is finished. After the recovery, if the CPU judges that an abnormality finish flag is on, an intermediate medium 10 is taken back by an amount of intermediate transfer image frames remaining without being transferred to a body to be transferred, and moreover, a color ribbon is taken back by an amount of used color areas. The CPU reads out an invalid display image stored in a ROM or the like, overwrites and transfers the invalid display image over a total breadth of the color ribbon onto the intermediate transfer image. Thereafter, the intermediate medium 10 is taken up as it is to an intermediate medium take-up roll.
